Cary-Grove pitchers toss two no-hitters

The Cary-Grove baseball team got some mighty fine pitching Wednesday and remained undefeated on its spring trip to Rent One Ballpark in downstate Marion.

Trojans’ senior Zach Marszal fired a five-inning no-hitter at St. Charles North as the Trojans won their morning game 10-0.

In their evening game, the Trojan got a seven-inning no-hitter from Dean Lee and Andrew Splitt in an 8-0 win over Eldorado.

Marszal struck out 4 and walked 1. He was also 2-for-3 at the plate in the win, while Lee had 2 RBI. Jeremy Vasquez, Matt Ewert, Dean Christakes and Andrew Brierton also drove in runs for the Trojans against St. Charles North.

In the win over Eldorado, Lee and Splitt combined for 12 strikeouts and only walked 1. Lee went the first 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and Splitt finished, striking out all 6 batters he faced.

Daniel Vilardo had a 2-run home run for the Trojans (3-0), while Michael Sutherland had 2 doubles and an RBI, Marszal doubled and Brierton drove in a run, as did Christakes and Patrick Serowka.

Huntley 16, DeKalb 8: Huntley scored 8 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win its season opener. The game featured 33 hits including 8 extra-base hits. Huntley had 19 hits including 5 for extra bases. Colin Lyman was 4-for-5 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI to lead the Red Raiders. Mark Skonieczny (2B, RBI), Bryce Only (3-for-5, 2B, RBI), Tyler Albright (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Matt Sullivan (RBI), Tommy Kiriakopolus (2 RBI), Kameron Sallee (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Tyler Mindak (2 RBI) and Jake Wagner (2-for-4, 2 RBI) all contributed to the offense as every Huntley player with an official at-bat recorded at least 1 hit. Nick Constantino picked up the win in relief.
