New charity aims to bring sports gear, hope to kids in need
Sport touches the lives of every corner of the globe and speaks a universal language. Moreover, the content of character and will of countless great leaders are impressed positively by the opportunity to play sports. However, not all children are afforded the gift of sport because of economic hardship. But, imagine a world where children everywhere have access to sporting equipment, creating camaraderie, hope, and love for sports. Gear for Goals has heard the call and is aiming to impact the lives of over 10,000 underprivileged kids this year.
Gear for Goals, a partner program of Northbrook, IL based Dreamweaver International, is building a movement, aligning sports equipment with children in need both locally in Chicago and overseas, including efforts in Kenya, the Dominican Republic and Russia. The program, 10,000 for 10,000, which will align sports equipment with children who need it most, is accepting donations of new and gently used sports equipment.
Founding director, Dr. Warren Bruhl says, “So many children around the world have virtually nothing. They have no soccer balls, no baseball mitts, absolutely no equipment to play with and have little hope for a brighter tomorrow. However, our abundance in the United States and our gently used sports gear and even musical instruments can be a Godsend to a child. Everyone has something in the garage or closet going unused and they just want to know someone will put it to good use. That's where we come in and provide the resource to connect the need with the generous giving.”
Since Gear for Goals' launch the summer of 2012, over 2,500 pieces of sports equipment and uniforms have been provided to underprivileged children in the Dominican Republic, Kenya, India, and Cuba.
