HERS Rater Certification Earned by Jerry Needham of Pro Energy Consultants

Geneva, IL – March 18, 2013 – Pro Energy Consultants of Geneva, Illinois announces that its owner, Jerry Needham recently completed all requirements to earn his certification as a HERS Rater. As a Certified Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater, Needham can now score the energy efficiency of a new or existing home. These scores are necessary for a new home to be ENERGY STAR rated.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy educating and helping Americans save money and protects the environment through energy efficient products and practices. According to the ENERGY STAR website (http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=new_homes.hm_index), a new home carrying the ENERGY STAR label delivers energy efficiency savings of up to 30 percent when compared to typical new homes.

Additionally, Needham says a HERS rating on an existing home is a starting point for remodeling work designed to improve energy efficiency. It is also necessary to qualify for Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM).

“During a HERS rating, we enter various measurements into a computer program and then compare the home to a reference home, generating a HERS Index score for the home,” says Needham. “The lower the HERS Index score, the more energy efficient it is. The Index is similar to a MPG (miles per gallon) rating for a car except the lower the number the better the efficiency”.

By combining the information gathered by a HERS rating with that of an energy audit (or assessment), homeowners can determine which home improvements would be most likely to reduce energy costs.

“We can determine where and how a home is losing energy,” explained Needham. “A Comprehensive HERS rating report contains a cost/benefit analysis for the recommended improvements and expected return on investment.”

The Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), an independent, nonprofit organization, certified Needham. According to the RESNET website (http://www.resnet.us/), the group is committed to helping homeowners reduce the cost of the utility bills by making their homes more energy efficient.
