Small fire breaks out at Batavia retirement center

Firefighters extinguished a small fire Thursday inside a bathroom wall at a Batavia retirement center, authorities said.

Crews were dispatched to The Holmstad retirement center, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, at 12:24 p.m. for reports of a structure fire, according to the Batavia Fire Department.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered smoke coming from a first-floor bathroom. Their investigation later found that the fire appeared to have started when maintenance personnel were soldering a broken water pipe in the wall, officials said.

The fire was brought under control by 1 p.m. Crews checked the second and third floors to see if the fire had spread, but it had not.

No residents were displaced and no injuries were reported.
