Village of Lombard Promotes River Sweep in May

LOMBARD, Illinois—Did you know that Lombard has a river? The East Branch of the DuPage River runs along the west edge of the Village. The river is home to a rich variety of fish including johnny darter, horny head chub and rock bass.

The DuPage River is also an important greenway for wildlife. Work is underway to improve the river's water quality and habitat. The dam at Churchill Woods Forest Preserve was removed in 2011 to allow fish passage and eliminate the low oxygen impairment in its impoundment. Information about that project and others is available at the DuPage River Salt Creek Workgroup's website, www.drscw.org.

The annual River Sweep will take place on May 18 from 9 a.m.-noon. Those on foot may clean the river banks at Churchill Woods. Those with access to a canoe may join the flotilla that will leave from the Churchill Woods parking lot on St. Charles Road and end at Roosevelt Road.

Information and registration is available from Lombard's Public Works Department, publicworks@villageoflombard.org or (630) 620-5765.
