America has a rich history of progress both technological and sociological. Nowadays, when youíre barraged with headlines about celebrities and politics, you can forget that we are still making history. In the coming days, Illinois will be making a momentous decision regarding same-sex marriage. Lawmakers are poised to join the ranks of Iowa, Maine, Maryland and six other states that have legalized same-sex marriage.
Sometimes, people are confused by my passionate defense of LGBT rights because I am heterosexual. I defend LGBT rights because I refuse to live on a cloud while I ignore the people being rained on. My best friend and I used to discuss our hopes for the future, including marriage and children. Then, she came out in our junior year of college and, just like that, we no longer had equal rights. She accepted her identity and, because of that, she now had inferior rights to me.
I donít deserve more rights than she has just because of my sexual orientation. Americans deserve more than this unbalanced system. We live in a world where it is no longer morally feasible to accept inequality. Please ask your Illinois representative to vote for the bill legalizing same-sex marriage.
