Rutherford, McConnaughay raise money for food pantries

By

The 12th Annual Kane County Farm Bureau Food Check-Out Challenge Monday at the Jewel-Osco in Batavia featured state Treasurer Dan Rutherford and State Sen. Karen McConnaughay raising more than $2,200 combined for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and Food for Greater Elgin.

The event was held in conjunction with National Food Check-Out Week, and also kicked off the farm bureau's Million Meal Challenge, with the goal of reaching the equivalent of 1 million meals provided to area food pantries through hunger relief efforts.

Rutherford filled his cart with $1,174.56 and McConnaughay had $1,033.17.

Farm bureau-sponsored shopping sprees have donated thousands of dollars in groceries to local food pantries. The shopping spree compliments the farm bureau's Harvest for ALL program, where farmers and non-farmers contribute crop proceeds, cash and in-kind donations to food pantries of their choice.
