Julien Moore, 22, of Elgin portrays Olaudah Equiano in Elgin Community College's production of "Voices of the Middle Passage." The one-act play about the slave trade affected Moore emotionally. He already knew a lot about the history but was struck by details of the life of Equiano, who ultimately bought his freedom.

About this Article

Julien Moore, an Elgin Community College student, played Olaudah Equiano in ECC’s staged reading of "Voices of the Middle Passage," a one-act play based on firsthand accounts of the slave trade. The role brought him face-to-face with many grisly details of slavery and forced him to reflect on his own modern-day privilege. Moore plans to transfer to a four-year university for a bachelor's degree in acting.
