National Ski Patrol Looking for Skiers and Snowboarders Interested in Helping Others
The National Ski Patrol is looking for advanced level skiers and snowboarders to become volunteer Ski Patrollers at Wilmot Mountain, just over the border in Wisconsin. An informational meeting covering job responsibilities, as well as time and financial commitments will be held on Sunday, February 10th. You must be pre-registered to attend. Training in first aid and rescue will be provided to those who pass the interview and on-snow assessment. This training will start over the summer.
The non-profit, federally-chartered National Ski Patrol has over 27,000 members, and is the largest winter rescue organization in the country. It was started in 1938, the same year that Wilmot Mountain started hosting skiers. The Wilmot Ski Patrol is possibly the largest ski and snowboard patrol in the country, with 210 active members. Members come from all walks of life, but share a common goal - to keep snow lovers safe while enjoying the exhilaration of sliding down the hills. They have twice won the National Outstanding Ski Patrol in the country.
Vince Clemens of Hawthorn Woods, Wilmot's Patrol Director, said “we are a like a ski club with a purpose. It is a great group of people who enjoy helping others”. Dale Davenport of Chicago, Training Advisor, stated “it is a great opportunity to further your ski or snowboarding skills. Although it is a major time commitment the first couple of years going through all the training, it is worth it”. Vince went on to say that once accepted, few drop out - most of their members enjoy it so much that they stay for decades.

Wilmot Mountain is a ski, snowboard and tubing area located just one hour from downtown Chicago. Being this far north, they typically receive more snowfall, and if there is not enough natural snow, they have the ability to make snow, allowing for winter sports enjoyment most seasons from Thanksgiving through St. Patrick's Day. Wilmot is currently reporting a 36” snow base.
