When it comes to selecting colleges, it's best to narrow the list down to a handful, or even a top three, before it's time to send in the applications.

It may be too late if you find out senior year that your college of choice requires three years of a foreign language. Start the selection process as a junior, or even a senior.

The college application process can be long and involved, so be sure to get started early and check the deadlines at all of your potential schools.

Students will need their parents' support to get into, and through, college, but parents should be careful to let the student lead the way regarding the college selection and application process.
