Nearly all oil is replaced when changed

By

Q. My question is about engine oil capacity. I have a 2012 Ford F-150 FX4 with the 5.0-liter V-8.

The owner's manual states when changing the oil and filter it takes 7.7 quarts. I had my first oil change done by my Ford dealer. They replaced the filter and six quarts of oil.

I didn't realize they put in six quarts until I got home and read my receipt. Thinking the oil level may be low, I pulled the dip stick and it looks like the oil level is OK. What am I missing here?

This first oil change was free from the dealer but I normally change my own oil and filter and would like to know the correct amount of oil needed the next time I do an oil change.

A. I double checked the oil capacity on your vehicle and you are correct -- the crankcase holds 7.7 quarts of oil. My guess is the technician put in the correct amount of oil and the service adviser used the wrong "canned job" when writing up your repair order.

You certainly did the right thing by checking the oil, so if it is full you are good to go. Just as important as the correct amount of oil is the correct kind of oil. Be sure when you start changing it on your own that you put in the type and weight oil called for by the manufacturer.

If you want to step up to a premium full synthetic oil, that would be fine, too. Just don't go to a lesser quality oil. Best of luck with your new truck I hope you enjoy it.
