Police apprehend fugitive in St. Charles

Police apprehended a man with a long criminal history — and wanted in conjunction with the attempted theft of a Campton Hills home — after learning he was hiding out in St. Charles.

Authorities have been looking for 38-year-old Daniel Kellogg since July 2011. Kellogg was last known to reside on the 40W700 block of Grand Monde Drive in Campton Hills. That’s the same residence authorities believe Kellogg tried to sell while renting it from the actual owner, according to Campton Hills police.

He is accused of changing the title to the house to his name with a quitclaim deed, then listing it with a real estate agent. Kellogg is also charged with paying $5,000 rent from an account with insufficient funds and forging the titles to two vehicles. The vehicles belong to the true owner of the home, but police said they believe Kellogg scrapped one and sold the other, a Corvette, to a used-car dealer.

Campton Hills police said Monday they received an anonymous tip about Kellogg hiding at a St. Charles residence. With assistance from St. Charles police and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Kellogg was located and arrested Saturday without incident.

He now faces additional charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, burglary, deceptive practice and possession of a stolen vehicle, according to police. His bail was set at $200,000.

Kellogg has had several other run-ins with the law, including not reporting to prison to begin a five-year sentence in August 2012 after pleading guilty to several car burglaries outside the XSport Fitness in St. Charles.

He has prior convictions for burglary, misuse of credit cards and theft, according to court records.
