Promote health, but stop targeting soda

A few weeks ago, The Daily Herald reported on Pepsi’s advertisement deal with Beyoncé Knowles (“Diet Pepsi plans new TV ads after sweetener tweak,” Dec. 17). Since then, there has been lots of negative buzz surrounding the deal, and I’m getting sick of it. Again and again we pick out a food to beat up on, and right now soda is the unfortunate target.

Let’s leave Beyoncé alone, get off Pepsi’s back and stop singling out one food to blame for all our health problems. Instead, let’s use this energy to come up with productive ways to encourage our peers to adopt healthy habits. Instead of writing piece after piece criticizing Beyoncé and Pepsi, let’s write about ways to start living healthy and active lives. These efforts will very likely have a positive effect on our friends and neighbors. I assure you, accusatory statements will not.
