Free tax return preparation for Elk Grove seniors

Seniors age 60 years and older and those with low to moderate incomes may sign up at the Sheila Ray Adult Center, 225 E. Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove Village, to have their 2012 federal and state income tax returns prepared for free.

Tax returns are prepared on Wednesdays and Fridays from Feb. 1 through April 12. Appointment times are 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m. A photo ID is required.

Volunteers for the Internal Revenue Service-AARP Tax-Aide Service will assist seniors with their return. Each volunteer is trained, tested, and certified annually by the IRS to participate in this program, including the commitment to protect private information. Volunteers can prepare federal form 1040s with schedules for wages, interest, dividends, pensions, Social Security, itemized deductions, and capital gains. They can also handle Schedules C and SE for persons with self-employment and expenses under $5,000.

The Tax-Aide service is not certified to prepare complicated returns. For information and to schedule an appointment, call (847) 364-7224.
