Front-page news? Really? Why did the Daily Herald feel Joe Walsh’s return from his ignominious two-year term as congressman warranted a front-page article on Jan. 4? This is a man whose last official act in Congress was to vote to drive our nation over the fiscal cliff!
While his incessant grandstanding brought attention to some legitimate concerns about the direction we are heading, Mr. Walsh’s reckless and irresponsible ideas would send this country down a ruinous path. For the most part, his term in Washington was an embarrassment and an antithesis of responsible governance. I do agree with him on one point, however. In the article he called for a “cleanse” of the Republican Party. What he doesn’t realize, though, is that the voters already began that process last November when they voted him and some of his Tea Party cohorts out of office.
The 8th District now has a representative in Tammy Duckworth who has pledged to work with members of both parties to find real answers to the issues that confront us. It’s time to stop giving voice to those who are so blinded by ideology that they are unable to govern effectively. The media should focus on those who would look for common ground solutions, not those whose rhetoric only serves to create chasms.
