Outdoor winter activities offered in Palatine

With 49 parks and facilities, Palatine Park District offers recreational opportunities for residents all year long. During the winter months, sledding, ice skating, and cross country skiing are offered free of charge at several of the district's parks.

Sledding is offered at Robert “Dutch” Schultz Recreation Area located near the golf course at 512 W. Northwest Highway and at Margreth Riemer Reservoir located at the corner of Quentin Road and Wood Street.

Palatine Park District also offers two unsupervised ice skating rinks at Community Park, 250 E. Wood Street. One rink is for public skating and one is for ice hockey. Rinks will be open daily with lights from 9:00am to 10:00pm, conditions permitting. A green flag will be posted when skating conditions are good, and a red flag will be posted when rinks are closed. The temperature must be 15-18 degrees for thirty continuous hours to initially prepare the rinks for ice making. The temperature must then remain below 18 degrees for six to seven consecutive days. For more information on ice conditions, call the ice hotline at 847-705-5123, ext. 352, or visit http://www.palatineparkdistrict.com/skatingconditions.html.

Finally, Palatine Hills Golf Course, 512 W. Northwest Hwy, is available for walking, running, cross country skiing, and dog walking during the winter months. Dogs are encouraged on the course, as this helps with goose control. These activities are not restricted to the cart paths. The cart paths just make it easier to get around the course. Cross country skiing is available at the course if there is sufficient snow cover of at least 3". Cross country skiing is not restricted to the cart paths. The availability of cross-country skiing will be posted on the golf course's website, www.palatinehills.org. During the winter months, patrons can access the golf course through a 6' gap between the two front gates.
