An Elgin man appeared in Kane County bond court Tuesday morning on felony charges of possession of cocaine and marijuana with intent to deliver.

Carlos Islas, 21, faces 4 to 30 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) with intent to deliver.

According to court records, an undercover Elgin police officer reported buying a 3.4 gram rock of cocaine from Islas Nov. 11 in a parking lot in the 600 block of Villa Street.

Then on Dec. 31, according to the court record, Islas was arrested by an Elgin police officer on charges of improperly signaling a turn and making an improper turn into the farthest lane. He was also charged with driving while his license was suspended, and illegal possession of a canceled, revoked or suspended license or permit. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of cannabis.

His girlfriend gave police permission to search their residence, according to the court record, and police found 24.6 grams of cannabis in five packages, a scale, two pipes, a grinder, "numerous" plastic bags with cannabis residue and $513.

Islas, who lives in the 500 block of Mann Place, is being held on $50,000 bail total.
