Bartlett tips Maine West; Hampshire wins Lisle consolation title

Had you told Bartlett girls basketball coach Denise Sarna a week ago her team would come out of the 30th annual Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown 2-2, she probably would have said OK.

And even though the Hawks would have liked another win or two, the defending Charger Classic champs did get out of D-C 2-2 and above .500 for the season after a come-from-behind 57-46 win over Maine West on Saturday.

“We played a composed game and fought through some foul trouble,” Sarna said.

The Hawks (10-9) trailed 25-17 at halftime but battled back to take a 38-37 lead after 3 quarters. They held a 43-38 lead with 5:14 left in the game when senior center Alyssa Hernandez fouled out. Freshman Kelly Harris came off the bench and drew Sarna’s praise for her play down the stretch.

“Alyssa fouled out with a good chunk of time left and Kelly came in and showed some poise today,” said Sarna.

Maine West (6-10) got to within 48-46 on 2 free throws from Brittany Collins with 1:32 to play but 6 seconds later, Bartlett junior Ally Giampapa drove the lane, scored, was fouled and made the free throw to put the Hawks up 51-46 with 1:26 left. Giampapa went 4-for-4 from the line and Elizabeth Arco made 2 free throws as Bartlett extended the final margin.

“Bartlett wanted the game more than we did,” said Maine West coach Derril Kipp. “We didn’t execute very well. They outrebounded us and they got to the free-throw line.”

Giampapa had 21 points and 6 assists for Bartlett, while Hernandez scored 17. Arco had 7 rebounds and Chantel Zasada had 3 steals.

Brittany Collins led the Warriors with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Ashley Collins and Alexia Porsperi each had 9 points and Erin Ross dished out 8 assists.

Buffalo Grove 50, Dundee-Crown 34: Bailey North scored 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting and had 8 rebounds to lead the Bison (5-11) to a win on the final day at Dundee-Crown. BG finished 2-2 in the tournament.

“We played really well defensively,” said BG coach Steve Kolodziej. “We contested a lot of shots and didn’t give them a lot of open looks. We did some things well offensively and we’re just looking to develop some depth.

“We’re really happy coming out of here 2-2. That’s some good momentum for us. We need to get healthy now. Bailey is just about 80-85 percent with her ankle and Amanda Salzman has an ankle bothering her.”

Salzman did have 8 assists for the Bison, while Julie Jambrone added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Maddie Welter hit 3 of BG’s 6 3-pointers.

Emily Michalski had 7 points for Dundee-Crown (2-13). Lauren Lococo added 6 points and 6 rebounds.

“We couldn’t make a shot again,” said D-C coach Michelle Russell, whose team went 1-3 in the tournament. “We had good opportunities but we let them shoot too many 3s. We ran our plays and we missed layups. The girls were working hard to get in the right spot, we just have to make more shots.”

Hampshire 55, Westmont 34: Jen Dumoulin scored 17 points and Emma Benoit added 10 as the Whip-Purs (5-10) won the consolation title at the Lisle tournament. Tricia Dumoulin added 8 points for Hampshire and Nikki Dumoulin had 7.

“The girls played a very disciplined game,” said Hampshire coach Ed Haugens.

Libertyville 45, Streamwood 43: Jessica Cerda had 17 points and Deja Moore and Megan McGlone added 10 each but Streamwood (14-4) fell at the last second in the third-place game at the Mundelein tournament.

Elgin 50, Jacobs 47: Maggie Powers scored 17 points, including going 9 of 13 from the free-throw line, and had 6 rebounds to lead the Maroons (4-13) to a win on the final day of the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North. Abby Pierre-Louis added 13 points and 10 rebounds, Kristin Tayag added 9 points and Tamara Milosevic pulled down 17 rebounds for Elgin. Anna Eckholm dished out 5 assists.

The Maroons will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 8 when they travel to Larkin for the first round of the Elgin City Classic.

Nicole Cook led Jacobs with 13 points and Payton Berg added 10 for Jacobs (1-16).

South Elgin 53, Oak Park-River Forest 49: Kennede Miller had 18 points and Delaney Kelleher added 10 as the Storm (9-8) completed a 2-2 run at the Montini tournament.

Huntley 43, Conant 39: The Red Raiders avenged a loss to Conant earlier in the tournament with this win at Mundelein. Ali Andrews led Huntley (13-3) with 20 points. She and Sam Andrews were named to the all-tournament team.

Timothy Christian 53, St. Edward 44: In a battle of the two teams that played for the Lisle tournament championship last year, a game St. Edward won, the Green Wave (1-14) fell in the consolation bracket Saturday. Cece Rapp had 15 points, Clarissa Ramos added 12 and Rena Ranallo had 11 for St. Edward.
