Waukegan center to host first ‘en plein air’ art show

The first Holiday Plein Air Art Show and Sale is now on display through Jan. 5 at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Waukegan, sponsored by the Lake County Art League and Lake County Arts Magazine.
The show is composed of 23 works by 11 artists from Lake, McHenry and Cook counties. Media include oil, watercolor, acrylic and photography.
"En plein air" is a French expression that means "in the open air," and is particularly used to describe a centuries-old practice of painting outdoors.
Artists forsake the comforts of a studio, working even in the wind and the snow for the excitement of painting from the living landscape and creating an image in the moment.
"This is an excellent opportunity to buy quality art at affordable prices as a holiday gift," said Chris Tanner, LCAL exhibits director.
"Prices range from $90 to $750, which are lower than those for gallery pieces because the work occurs rapidly in the field with minimal studio touch-up later."
The Jack Benny Center is located in Waukegan's Bowen Park. Go north on Sheridan Road from Greenwood Avenue and take the second entrance into the park. Center hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
The center will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 29 and 31, and Jan. 5 for the holidays, and weekday hours through that period will end at 5 p.m.
