Indiana-based Cummins agreed last October to supply engines and technology to Navistar that allows the Lisle-based truck maker to meet tougher EPA diesel emission standards. The company was unable to meet tougher 2012 standards and agreed to be fined by the EPA as they continued to sell trucks that did not meet the new standards. However, rivals Mack Trucks Inc. and Volvo Group North America LLC challenged that agreement in court last spring, which led the EPA to enact higher fines on Navistar, up to $3,800 per noncompliant engine.
Other models, including the International ProStar+ with MaxxForce 13 equipped with Cummins' aftertreatment system, is on target for initial production in March 2013, with regular production to begin in April 2013, the company said. The remaining lineup of heavy-duty truck models will transition throughout 2013 based on volume and customer demand, the company said.
