Republicans holding the nation hostage
It is unconscionable that this holiday season, Republican members of Congress are considering holding the economy hostage in order to protect the Bush tax cuts for people making over $250,000 a year. If Congress doesn’t reach a deal by Jan. 1 we will go over the “fiscal cliff,” and taxes will automatically go up on everyone. The consensus of economists is that if that happens, we will likely enter another recession.
In addition to the fiscal cliff issue, we also have a huge national deficit. Solving that problem will require sacrifices by everyone. Why are Republicans in Congress protecting the extremely wealthy, and not asking them to contribute anything toward a solution? I’m not rich, but I am willing to sacrifice programs that I depend on to put our nation on sound fiscal footing. It’s a travesty that Republican members of Congress think the wealthy are in need of special protection from any shared sacrifice.
