Proviso West comes back, tops Fremd for Fenton title
Everything was going as planned for Fremd’s boys basketball team and coach Bob Widlowski in Friday’s championship game of the Fenton tournament against Proviso West.
The Vikings led by 6 after the first quarter, by 12 at the half and by 9 after three quarters.
“I thought we played really well for three quarters,” Widlowski said. “Our guys controlled the pace of the game, we limited their dribble penetration and we did a very nice job on the defensive boards.”
Most of that changed dramatically in the fourth quarter, though, as Proviso West outscored the Vikings 32-13 in the period to claim a 63-53 victory.
Widlowski said at the very least, the outcome showed him what his team needs to work on.
“I think we approached it as game that will help prepare us for the MSL,” he said. “We were playing a quality opponent with a high level of skill and quickness.”
“I think our guy are disappointed in themselves, mainly because they played like we needed to play for those first three quarters,” Widlowski said.
Riley Glassman finished with a team-high 24 points and made 15 of 21 fouls shots. Michael Krupa had 8 points for the Vikings (3-1), and Kevin Kubis, Sean Benka and Ben Carlson scored 6 apiece.
Barrington 45, Lake Forest Academy 32: The Broncos wrapped up a 2-2 performance in Mundelein’s tournament with a decisive victory.
Conant 49, Walther Lutheran 34: Robert Hudson produced a game-best 20 points to lift the Cougars in tournament play at St. Viator. Jon Fuqua led Walther Lutheran with 14 points.
Hersey 60, Manley 39: The Huskies earned their first win of the year by claiming victory in their final contest of Niles West tournament play.
Alex Sutrinaitis scored 17 points and earned all-tournament team honors.
In three previous losses, Sutrinaitis scored in double digits each time and led Hersey in scoring, with 19 against Niles West, 13 against Lake Forest and 15 against Urban Prep.
Maine South 55, Maine West 50: Maine West erupted for 24 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t quite enough to catch the Hawks in tournament play in Des Plaines. Maine South held the Warriors to 6 points in the first quarter and the Hawks led 25-15 at the half.
