Schaumburg School Nominated for Grant to Fund Student Service Learning

Teachers and parents give students the building blocks they need to learn and grow. Now students at Stevenson Elementary School in Schaumburg School District 54 are looking to use what they have learned at school to better the community. After a competitive nomination period, Stevenson was named as a finalist in The Clorox Company's Power a Bright Future program based on a grant proposal for student engagement in Service Learning.

“The program is really about giving students ownership in their learning and applying it to efforts in the community,” says Dr. Maria Clifford, Stevenson Principal. “We have a vision for getting students involved in hands on experiences throughout the community in areas they truly care about.” Funding from the grant would provide resources for a service learning club, student-written grants to non-profit organizations, a Great Day of Service where each classroom will complete a service learning project, and Art from the Heart, an art gala featuring student artwork.

The school is working hard to make their votes count, and is relying on support from the community to make it happen. Help Stevenson win up to $50,000 by casting votes through December 19, 2012. The program that receives the highest number of votes will be awarded the $50,000 grand-prize grant, and the next top vote-getters in the Play, Create and Explore categories respectively will each be awarded a $25,000 grant. Clorox's judging panel, will select three additional lucky schools, one in each category, to win a $25,000 judge's choice grant.
