Streamwood denies Dundee-Crown
Start fast in both halves and solid play in between.
That was the recipe for Streamwood's 52-35 win over Dundee-Crown in first round action at the Dundee-Crown girls Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday night.
It was the season opener for both teams.
The Sabres basically seized control of the game in the first quarter. Outscoring the Chargers 12-0 during the first 8 minutes of the game, Streamwood connected on 5-of-8 shots from the floor. Jessica Cerda led the way with 5 first-quarter points.
D-C didn't score until 7:32 left in the second quarter when Jillian Weichmann scored on a driving layup to make the score 12-2.
Leading 26-12 at halftime, the Sabres put the game on ice by beginning the third quarter on a 14-2 run. Deja Moore, Hannah McGlone and Kimberly Jimenez each scored 4 points as Streamwood opened up a 40-14 lead with 3:18 left in the quarter.
Cerda led Streamwood with 14 points while McGlone scored 13 with 8 rebounds.
"It was a good first game," said Streamwood coach George Rosner. "We started fast and played great pressure defense in the first quarter. We got the running game going and got some easy baskets."
Lauren Lococo led D-C with 10 points.
"We got ourselves stuck in a hole early and never could climb out," said Charger coach Michelle Russell. "We are young and learned a lot tonight. I liked our effort. It was great throughout the game."
