Carol Stream rec center gets a name: Fountain View

By Christopher Placek

Carol Stream Park District's $18 million, 90,846-square-foot recreation center now taking shape at Town Center finally has a name: Fountain View Recreation Center.

The selection of the name by the park district's board of commissioners this week is the result of months of brainstorming sessions and discussion among the board and park district staff, and the results of two online surveys sent to subscribers of the district's e-newsletter.

A survey last week asked residents for their opinions on four final naming options selected from as many as 189 at the start of the process this summer. The choices were Fountain View Recreation Center, Carol Stream Recreation Center, Cornerstone Recreation Center and The Rec.

Fountain View was "a clear choice" by the board and community members who responded to the online survey, park board President Brenda Gramann said.

For one thing, there's a fountain at Town Center, and the street that would lead directly to the rec center is Fountain View Drive. For another, the retail development across the street on Lies Road is called The Fountains at Town Center.

"I think it helps unify the entire corner as one community area," Gramann said.

The center will feature a gymnasium with three basketball courts, 25-yard swimming pool, fitness center, running track and program rooms. It's the marquee project of a $37 million parks improvement program approved by voters in a February 2010 referendum question.

The center is expected to have a soft opening next summer with a grand opening in the fall.
