Police: Elgin baby sustained injuries from shaking
An Elgin man is accused of shaking his baby daughter so hard that she had to be put in the hospital, according to police.
Daniel A. Cronin, 39, of the 600 block of Page Avenue in Elgin, faces two counts of aggravated battery, alleging he shook the girl on two separate occasions on Oct. 22.
According to a police report, on Oct. 23 the girl was admitted to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago with seizures and was found to have intracranial and retinal hemorrhages — she had been transferred to Lurie from Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
The next day, a doctor told the detective that her injuries were consistent with trauma.
During a subsequent interview with police, Cronin and his wife denied hurting their child. But on Monday, Cronin admitted to both his attorney and to a Department of Children and Family Services worker that he shook his daughter twice inside the home, the report said.
The girl remains hospitalized at Lurie, Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said.
Meanwhile, Cronin’s bail was set at $30,000 Tuesday morning and he needs to pay the entire amount to get out of jail. He is due in court Nov. 21 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
If found guilty of the most serious charge of aggravated battery, Cronin could spend between six and 30 years in prison.
