Glendale Lions Club announces local peace poster winners

Students from Glenside Middle School, Marquardt Middle School and St. Matthew School in Glendale Heights joined more than 375,000 children worldwide in the 25th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Sponsored locally by the Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club, the contest emphasizes the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

The first-prize winners from the three schools were Saul de la Torre of Glenside Middle School, Morgan Mott of Marquardt School, and Alyssa Tumlos of St. Matthew School. Their posters were selected by teachers and other officials in their respective schools for originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Imagine Peace.”

Barangay Lions President Lilia Narciso said she was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students.

“It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their vision,” she said.

The first-prize winners from the three schools will advance to face stiff competition through the district and may continue to multiple district and international rounds of competition. One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit awardees each will receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.

Locally, the first prize winners and 17 other students were honored by the Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Marquardt Administration Center in Glendale Heights. A total of 89 students participated from the three schools.

The grand prize and merit award winners’ posters will be posted at www.lionsclubs.org.
