Rock Valley stops Harper

The top-seeded Rock Valley’s women’s volleyball team defeated Harper for the fourth time this season 16-25, 18-25, 19-25 to win the NJCAA Region IV District B championship on Saturday in Rockford.

The Golden Eagles (37-8), who hosted the tourney, will advance to the national tournament and face Ridgewood.

In the title match, the Hawks (36-16) were led on attack by Veronica Dabrowski (11 kills) and Erin Hellweg (10) while setter Kelly Somers handed out 20 assists with 21 digs for a double-double.

Hellweg (2 aces) and Drabowski (1 ace) also recorded double-doubles with 11 digs apiece.

No. 2 seed Harper defeated No. 3 Madison College 25-23, 27-25, 25-19 in the semifinals as Hellweg (17 kills), Dabrowski (7), Stephanie Igielski (7) and Rebekah Hischke (4) led the attack set by Somers (35 assists).

Top diggers were Somers (20), Sarah House (17) and Megan Kollmeyer (12) while Somers was 17-of-17 serving.

“We played well in both matches,” said Hawks coach Bob Vilsoet. “Rock Valley is a better team than us this year. There is no shame in losing that tough match.”

The Golden Eagles have advanced to the regional championship match in every season since 2007 and won it in 2010 and 2011 under head coach Abby Jenkins before going on to finish third at the national tournament both seasons.

In 2004, Rock Valley finished as the runner-up at the national tournament under coach Ben Staupe, and the Golden Eagles NJCAA national titles in 1996 and 1997 under coach Heidi Hutchison.

Ÿ The Harper womens’ soccer team advanced in the postseason with a 2-1 victory over host College of DuPage.
