Harper breezes in Region IV quarterfinal

The Harper College women’s volleyball team only needed 50 minutes to dispatch Milwaukee Area Technical College in quarterfinal play of the NJCAA Region IV tournament on Wednesday at the Sports and Wellness Center in Palatine.

Harper, the No. 2 seed in the region, topped Milwaukee 25-5, 25-12, 25-9.

The Hawks (35-15) advance to play the winner of the Madison Area Technical College vs. College of DuPage matchup in a noon Saturday semifinal in Rockford, while Milwaukee wraps up a winless season at 0-18.

Harper (35-15) knows the little things could make a big difference the rest of the way in the postseason. A timeout in the second set by coach Bob Vilsoet seemed to refocus the Hawks, who improved quickly with serving and serve receive.

“(Tuesday) we worked really hard on serving and serve receive,” said Harper sophomore middle hitter Clara Moravec (Jacobs).

It showed. Moravec produced a 22-for-22 service effort with 7 aces.

“I felt really good at the line tonight,” Moravec said.

After suffering an ankle injury last season, Moravec says she feels completely healthy.

“I finally felt like I got my serve back,” she said. “This year it’s been good and consistent.”

Another key for Harper was the play of freshman outside hitter Rebekah Hischke (Dundee-Crown). Playing all three sets, she finished with 8 kills.
