It has been a great honor to serve as a DuPage County Forest Preserve District commissioner for almost 22 years. I want the 6th district to be represented in the future by the best person for the position.
I strongly feel that Shannon Burns is the best, the right candidate. She has a firm commitment to maintain our open spaces, and in the words of the Illinois Enabling Act, a firm commitment to preserve, protect, restore and restock the natural flora and fauna for the education and recreation of the people. She is a business owner and holds an MBA degree which will help make her an excellent trustee of our money.
She also does volunteer work for both the Conservation Foundation and Morton Arboretum. Through the Arboretum she has certification as a Woodland Steward and a Steward Supervisor, starting her study of natural preservation and restoration in 2009. In contrast, at that time I heard her opponent say he wanted to use the position of forest preserve commissioner to promote development, which is outside the statutory authority of the office and made me conclude he was running for the wrong office.
Since 2010 Shannon Burns has brought sensible proposals to the commission to improve the openness and transparency of commission activity. By contrast, her opponent wants to deform the commission by taking away your right to vote for the president of the commission and give it back to a small group of politicians.
Shannon Burns understands that good fiscal policy calls for living within our means. In contrast, Iíve listened to her opponent say the district should build more facilities and increase operations, increasing short term and long term costs, without saying how he would pay for this.
