Illinois crime-victim alerts now available by text

Illinois’ automated system for notifying crime victims and others about the status of offenders has added text messaging as an option.

The state attorney general’s office said Monday that registered users of the Automated Victim Notification can now receive text message alerts.

The system provides updates about court appearances, custody status and other information about offenders in 101 Illinois counties. Cook County has its own system.

Messages from the state system can be sent in English or Spanish. In addition to texts, they also can be sent through telephone calls or by email.
