Seminars on shoulder replacement in DuPage County

People who struggle to reach up high, comb their hair and sleep through the night because of shoulder pain can benefit from a series of free, informational seminars about new options in treating shoulder conditions and regaining motion. “Why Live With Chronic Shoulder Pain?” will be held in Oak Brook and Winfield this month.

Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush physicians, some of the best shoulder surgeons in the country, will discuss the most advanced treatment options for shoulder pain. Those options include minimally invasive procedures, as well as rotator cuff and shoulder replacement surgeries. They will also discuss a new reverse shoulder replacement surgery that is changing lives for patients with severe arthritis or failed rotator cuffs who have suffered from shoulder immobility for years.

While there is much news about the latest developments in hip and knee replacement, many are unfamiliar with the concept of shoulder replacement. But with an aging population, there are an increasing number of patients who suffer from pain caused by arthritis in the shoulders. In fact, shoulder replacement, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, is the third most common joint replacement after knees and hips. And it's growing more common every year. According to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the number of shoulder replacement procedures increased by 145% between 1997 and 2005.

Shoulder arthroplasty involves replacing the damaged joint with synthetic components. The ‘ball' (humeral head) of the shoulder joint is replaced with an implant that includes a stem with a smooth, rounded metal head. The ‘socket' (glenoid) is replaced with a smooth, rounded plastic cup that fits the head of the ball perfectly. Shoulder replacement surgery is very effective at restoring range of motion, strength and pain relief.
