Prospect surprises Palatine

Prospect played the role of giant killer on Tuesday in Class 3A boys soccer regional semifinal at Hoffman Estates.

The Knights, seeded 16th in the Conant sectional, got a pair of second-half goals to eliminate No. 1 seed Palatine 2-0.

Matt Burikas and Matt Wruskyj had the goals for Prospect (8-8-4).

Junior goalkeeper Jack Cooney made 8 saves to earn the shutout for the Knights, who meet Conant in a 5 p.m. Friday regional title matchup at Hoffman Estates.

Senior keeper Kyle Leber had 8 saves for the Mid-Suburban League champion Pirates, who finished the season 16-2-3.

Conant 4, Lake Forest 0: The Cougars earned a spot against Prospect in the regional championship round by shutting out the Scouts.

Elk Grove regional

Libertyville 4, Elk Grove 1: The visiting Wildcats picked up a decisive win at Elk Grove and will meet Highland Park, a 3-0 winner over Carmel, for the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elk Grove.

Mundelein regional

Buffalo Grove 1, Wheeling 0: The Mid-Suburban East champs battled past the Wildcats to earn a spot against Fremd in the regional championship round at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Fremd 4, Mundelein 1: Senior midfielder Jeremy Kosacz produced a hat trick for Fremd, which advanced to the regional final on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Buffalo Grove.

Kosacz was assisted by senior Lucas Cholewa on his second goal while the other two were unassisted.

Senior Jon Magnusson scored the Vikes' first goal.

Fremd goalkeeper Steven Soltykiewicz made 7 saves.

Niles North regional

Maine West 3, Steinmetz 1: The Warriors got through their first postseason test and will face either Evanston, a 3-1 winner against Niles North, in the regional championship round at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Leyden regional

The host Eagles edged Foreman 3-2 to earn a spot against Glenbrook North, a 1-0 winner against Maine East, with a regional crown at stake.
