Charitable giving isn’t the cure

I am writing in response to Ed Carver’s letter in support of Paul Ryan’s fiscally conservative budget. He said that we will have more money in our own pockets instead of the government’s coffers and that we can donate it to Catholic Charities. When Americans who may have paid taxes for decades need help, they don’t feel they should have to beg for money from charities.

This demonstrates the point of view of a lot of wealthy conservatives. Lower our taxes, cut the government safety net, causing millions more to fall into poverty, and then they will show how charitable they are by donating money to charities. I think what most people who need help would say is “We don’t want your charity!”
