Purdue plans adding 100 engineering professors

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University is hiring more than 100 new engineering professors as part of an effort to move the school to the top of the engineering field

The plan also aims to boost undergraduate engineering enrollment 10 percent within the next five years. Undergraduate enrollment in Purdue’s College of Engineering grew by 17 percent between 2006 and 2011 to nearly 7,100, resulting in more students applying for limited spots in the school.

The Journal & Courier reports acting President Tim Sands says Purdue had a choice between either reducing engineering enrollment to maintain quality or adding new faculty.

Purdue might invest up to $200 million at first into its effort announced Tuesday to hire up to 107 new junior and senior faculty as well as renowned experts.
