By

The Des Plaines Fire Department has announced three upcoming community events:

In celebration of Fire Prevention Week, October 7 -- 13, 2012, the Des Plaines Fire Department will host a public Open House, 11AM to 3PM, Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Fire Station #3, 130 E. Thacker Street, Des Plaines (just east of Mount Prospect Rd). Citizens are invited to meet their emergency responders, tour the fire station, look at emergency response vehicles, view demonstrations, obtain information and enjoy a hotdog lunch. A fun event for the whole family, there will be special activities for the kids, raffles, popcorn, snacks, and more. Please call the Fire Prevention Bureau at 847-391-5340 for more information.

The Fire Department will be offering FREE classes in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to Des Plaines residents at 7 PM, Tuesday, October 16, 2012, and at 7 PM, Monday, November 5, 2012, at Fire Station 1, 405 S. River Road. These sessions will follow the American Heart Association's "Friends and Family CPR" classes, which include basic instruction in adult, child, and infant CPR.

The use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), which are devices located in many public buildings for emergency use, will be addressed. Attendees must be Des Plaines residents 16 years of age or older. Class attendees will NOT receive certification. Classes will last approximately two hours each, and include instruction and hands-on practice.
