Advocate Condell focuses on diabetes, healthy holiday cooking

Advocate Condell Medical Center will host community education programs in November focusing on diabetes management, and healthy holiday cooking.

“Living with Diabetes,” a physician lecture and expo, will be held from 6-9 pm on Monday, Nov. 5, at Advocate Condell’s Conference Center, 700 Garfield Ave. in Libertyville.

The evening will begin with a lecture by Scott Jacobsen, DPM, Board Certified in Podiatric Surgery. Dr. Jacobsen will lecture on foot care and other issues commonly faced by diabetic patients.

“People with diabetes can develop many different foot problems. Even ordinary problems can get worse and lead to serious complications. Foot problems most often happen when there is nerve damage, also called neuropathy, which results in loss of feeling in your feet. Poor blood flow or changes in the shape of your feet or toes may also cause problems,” Dr. Jacobsen said.

Dr. Jacobsen will talk about preventing and treating foot problems. A Q&A will follow the presentation.

Guests will also have the chance to visit vendor booths, with representatives from medical supply companies, pharmacists, local grocers and others. The event also will include refreshments and giveaways.

The program is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request class SEDIABEX5.

On Nov. 14, Advocate Condell will host “Table Time with Family and Friends.”

Chef Ryan Hutmacher, CEO and Founder of Centered Chef, will teach participants how to create an honest-to-goodness family-style meal, with a focus on wholesome ingredients.

“With the help of your family and friends on Thanksgiving, you'll have the nutritional "know how" and tools to prepare a more mindful meal, while still enjoying your guests,” Hutmacher said.

The program includes a registered dietitian to answer questions while Chef Ryan prepares mouth-watering samples.

The program will take place at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Condell Conference Center. The cost is $15 per person, and space is limited. Register by calling 800-323-8622 and requesting class SEPTABLE5.
