State offices to be closed on Columbus Day holiday

Gov. Pat Quinn will be among the participants marching in Chicago’s Columbus Day Parade.

The event is slated to start at 12:30 p.m. on Monday in Grant Park, which is along Chicago’s lakefront. City officials say some downtown streets will be closed due to the parade.

Columbus Day is a state holiday, and that means state offices will be closed.

However, Chicago Public School students don’t have the day off this year. The holiday for them starts next year, as was negotiated in the news teachers’ contract.

Also, almost all branches of the Chicago Public Library will be open Monday.
