Prostate cancer is a form of glandular cancer that occurs in the prostate gland of the male reproductive system. Cancer of the prostate can disrupt normal urinary and bowel movement and sexual functions. Since symptoms are usually not apparent until the cancer spreads throughout the prostate, it is important to be aware of risk factors and understand prevention methods.

Unfortunately, many risk factors of prostate cancer are uncontrollable. For example, the risk for developing prostate cancer increases with age. More than 65% of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65. Race is another indicator of risk; African American men are at the highest risk for developing prostate cancer, while Asian men are at the lowest. Also, family history of the disease doubles the risk for developing prostate cancer.

Still, preventative measures can be taken to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. A healthy diet supported by exercise is important to mitigate the risk of developing cancer. Men should minimize their fat intake from red meat and consume more omega-3 fat in fish. Eat plenty of vegetables and don't consumer more than 1500 mg of calcium per day. Maintain a healthy blood pressure and consult your physician about the benefits of prostate screenings.
