Advanced in Prostate Health: Are You at Risk?

Barrington, IL- Did you know that prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 men? According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, it is the most common non-skin cancer in America. How do you know if you are at risk? What are your options if you or a loved one is diagnosed? Join us at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital on Tuesday, October 16 from 6:30 – 8 pm for the Advances in Prostate Health seminar and find out more about risk factors, prostate screenings, and treatment options.

The seminar will feature Brian Keuer, MD, board certified urologist, as a guest speaker. Dr. Keuer will discuss the major risk factors for prostate cancer and the importance of prostate screenings for early detection. He will also highlight the latest advancements in cancer treatment options. According to Dr. Keuer, “Treatment for prostate cancer has never been better then it is today. There have been many surgical and radiation treatment advancements and patients with localized disease can be cured with minimal side effects. New chemotherapy and immunotherapy options exist for advanced disease. We are learning that some cancers may not require immediate treatment at all.”

Prostate cancer is a form of glandular cancer that occurs in the prostate gland of the male reproductive system. Cancer of the prostate can disrupt normal urinary and bowel movement and sexual functions. Since symptoms are usually not apparent until the cancer spreads throughout the prostate, it is important to be aware of risk factors and understand prevention methods.

Unfortunately, many risk factors of prostate cancer are uncontrollable. For example, the risk for developing prostate cancer increases with age. More than 65% of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65. Race is another indicator of risk; African American men are at the highest risk for developing prostate cancer, while Asian men are at the lowest. Also, family history of the disease doubles the risk for developing prostate cancer.

Still, preventative measures can be taken to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. A healthy diet supported by exercise is important to mitigate the risk of developing cancer. Men should minimize their fat intake from red meat and consume more omega-3 fat in fish. Eat plenty of vegetables and don’t consumer more than 1500 mg of calcium per day. Maintain a healthy blood pressure and consult your physician about the benefits of prostate screenings.
