Dundee-Crown, Burlington win tourney titles
It was a good Saturday for the boys soccer teams from Dundee-Crown and Burlington Central.
And not a bad one for St. Edward coach Tim Brieger either.
Dundee-Crown bounced back from a Friday night scoreless tie with Johnsburg to win twice on Saturday and claim the championship of the McHenry Invite, while Burlington Central won twice to earn the tournament title at Hampshire.
Meanwhile, Brieger coached his 400th boys soccer game at St. Edward and watched as his Green Wave won a thrilling 3-2 decision over Chicago Christian in Suburban Christian Conference action.
At McHenry: Dundee-Crown downed the host team 1-0 and Harlem 7-1 to win the McHenry title. Jose Angeles scored off an assist from Francisco Nava for the only goal of the game against McHenry, and Christian Martinez made 3 saves in goal. Against Harlem, Angeles and Nava each scored twice for the Chargers (16-1-1) with Jonathan Castillo, Jason Wind and Malik Washington each finding the back of the net once. Martinez made 2 saves and Jose Gonzalez stopped 1 shot for D-C.
“Johnsburg was a terrible game for us,” said Dundee-Crown coach Rey Vargas. “It was a big wake-up call.”
At Hampshire: Burlington Central knocked off the host Whip-Purs 5-2 in the semifinals then blitzed South Elgin by the same score in the championship game. Bryce Warner scored twice with Josh Lung, Stefan Jochum and James Raney each adding goals against Hampshire. Drew McMahon had 3 saves in the first half in goal and Joe Boneta made 2 stops in the second half. In the championship match, Warner again scored twice for the Rockets (12-2-2), as did Alan Camarena. Pablo Sespene added the Rockets’ other goal and Brett Rau made 8 saves in the net.
“We are very proud of our team’s performance today on the field,” said BC coach Mike Gecan. “They have really started to help each other with achieving both team and individual goals. We look forward to playing against Streamwood this coming Thursday and then finishing off our conference season with a bang.
“We wanted to go in and win this tournament. We fell short at DeKalb earlier this season and we have a really good team this year. We broke through this time. We have been struggling with consistency but we have the potential to do some special things in the postseason.”
South Elgin beat Woodstock North 3-2 in PKs to advance to the championship match. Jose Hernandez and Alberto Bustamante scored the Storm’s goals prior to PKs and Tyler Shipon had 7 saves in goal. Bustamante and Phil Saccameno scored South Elgin’s goals in the title match, while Shipon made 5 saves in goal and Michael Cortez stopped 6 shots for the Storm (6-9).
Woodstock North defeated Hampshire 4-3 in overtime in the third place game.
St. Edward 3, Chicago Christian 2: Kevin Olenek and Nick Semler scored goals for the Green Wave, who then won the contest in a shootout. Matt Hesch made 6 saves in the net for St. Edward (7-12, 3-5) and John Gotheridge had 4.
“It was an awesome win,” Brieger said. “The kids really stepped up to win the game.”
Elgin Academy 3, Crossroads Christian 2: Drew Wilmington, Armando Sanchez and Karl Rauschenberger scored goals as the Hilltoppers won their homecoming game in nonconference action. Nate Johnson had 2 saves and Liam Phalen also stopped 2 shots for Elgin Academy (6-4-3).
Schaumburg 6, Bartlett 1: Matt Seidle had Bartlett’s only goal in this nonconference loss. Justin Busch made 7 saves in goal for the Hawks.
Huntley 1, Elgin 0: Zach Stenger scored off an assist from Jakub Rys as Huntley blanked Elgin in nonconference action. Auston Emery made 6 saves in goal for the Red Raiders (14-4-1) and Flavio Jaimez had 6 stops in the net for the Maroons (3-12-2).
Northridge Prep 2, Westminster Christian 0: Sam Carani had 15 saves in goal for the Warriors (9-3-1) in this nonconference loss.
