Fremd, Palatine still tied in West

Fremd’s girls volleyball team remained tied for first place with Palatine in the Mid-Suburban West with a 25-11, 25-15 victory over host Conant.

The Vikings (16-4, 6-1) received 4 kills apiece by senior Claire Brady and sophomore Lane Hindenburg while senior setter Marilyn Lortz handed out 16 assists with 3 blocks against the Cougars (8-13, 1-6).

Palatine d. Hoffman Estates: The Pirates improved to 17-4 and 6-1 in their MSL West with a 25-17, 26-24 triumph.

Taylor Fricano and Val Soderstrom each had 7 kills for visiting Palatine while Cassie Chaplinsky added 4. Chaplinsky, Sarah Schiffner and Casey Dolen each served 2 aces while Schiffner (12 assists) and Alex Heidrich (7) set the attack.

Destinee Young collected 7 kills and 5 blocks for the Hawks while Renee Clemment was 21-of-21 setting with 4 assists. Teammate Becca Stoczynski had 2 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces.

Hersey d. Elk Grove: Host Hersey improved to 18-3 and 7-0 with a 25-12, 25-8 victory that gave Huskies coach Nancy Lill her 799th career win and 48th straight in the MSL East.

Anna Mullen-Muhr (6 kills), Courtney Stedman (4), Erica Hill (3) and Annie Fesl (3) led the Hersey attack set by Fesl, who had 16 assists and 6 aces (16-of-17 serving).

Taylor Schill was 7-of-7 serving with 2 aces and sparked the back row with 12 digs. Gabriella Olhava led Hersey with 3 blocks while Mullen-Muhr had 2 against the Grenadiers (3-4 in the MSL East).

Rolling Meadows d. Prospect: Visiting Rolling Meadows (12-8, 3-4) pulled out a 25-20, 24-26, 25-8 as Morgan Keller (9 kills), Rachel Mickey (7), Jenny Vliet (4) and Lauren Sokolowski (4) led the Mustangs’ attack set by Sami Kay (12 assists) and Vliet (8 assists).

Grace Skorin and Vliet collected 9 digs while Mickey had 6 blocks.

Teammates Amy Wenzel served 4 aces and Mia Harper 3 against the Knights (8-12, 2-5) in the MSL East match.

Buffalo Grove d. Wheeling: Behind the attack of Alaina Murphy (6 kills), Bailey North (5), Alicia Kantor (5) and Alyssa Mills (4), the host Bison (10-11, 5-2) pulled out a close MSL East match 25-23, 25-23.

Marie Georgoulis handed out 21 assists while Lea Masciopinto was 11-of-12 digging against the Wildcats (6-10, 1-6).

Highland Park d. Maine West: Highland Park won the CSL North match 25-23, 25-16. Ashley Collins (3 kills), Brittany Collins (2 kills, 2 solo blocks) and Magda Czerlonko (2 kills) were top attackers for Maine West (4-14, 1-4), which received 10 assists from setter Kassidy Riportella.

“We showed great effort in the first set,” said Warriors coach Randy Tiller. “We just need a little more from our hitters. I asked Kassidy Riportella to play all the way around, something she normally doesn’t do.

“She did her best, even going up to block (Stela) Kukoc (daughter of ex-Bull Tony Kukoc). We served tougher. We passed better. We were able to run an offense. We’ll learn from this match and get ready for Maine East (next Tuesday).”
