DeTrempe, Renner lead St. Viator to ESCC title

St. Viator won the boys golf championship in the East Suburban Catholic Conference on Thursday by winning the league tournament at Old Orchard Golf Course.

The Lions trailed Carmel by a single point in the overall ESCC standings heading into Thursday’s action.

But St. Viator, behind medalist Luke DeTrempe (74) and runner-up Robert Renner (76), earned 11 points for its winning total of 318, enough to vault it past the Corsairs by 1 point in the final conference standings.

Carmel finished second in the meet and overall standings, and was led Thursday by a third-place effort from Jackson Wietecha. Jared Moore, Nick Tasch and Nathan Ley each shot 82 for the Corsairs and tied for seventh.

Hudson Luthringshausen also broke into the top 10 for St. Viator with an 83.

Carmel, the defending champ, finished well ahead of third-place Nazareth (341) and fourth-place Benet (344) on Thursday.

Benet’s best round came from Alex Bassetto, who shot 81 and finished tied for fifth. Bryson Vargas contributed an 83 and tied for 10th individually for the Redwings.
