Music notes: Viper Alley hosts Ronnie Baker Brooks
Blues legacy
Ronnie Baker Brooks, son of blues legend Lonnie Brooks, has staked out his own territory in the genre by bringing other sounds — rock, funk — to the music.
Ronnie Baker Brooks appears with the Cedric Burnside Project at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Viper Alley, 275 Parkway Drive, Lincolnshire. Tickets start at $15. Go to viper-alley.com.
Post-punk heroes
Mission of Burma continues to write one of the most successful second acts in recent rock history. The band burst out of the Boston scene in the 1980s with an angular, punk-inspired sound that paired noise with melody. Burma released two groundbreaking records before disbanding in the middle part of the decade when guitarist Roger Miller developed a case of tinnitus. Flash forward nearly 20 years to 2002, when the band re-formed and released the first in a slew of albums that are just as good as the old stuff. The band, which now features Chicago-based musician and producer Bob Weston, is touring behind its most recent release, “Unsound.”
9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. $20. Go to lincolnhallchicago.com.

There are some big rock shows coming up in the suburbs during the next few weeks. Don't get shut out — order tickets now.
Ÿ “The Go-Gos with Belinda Carlisle” will appear Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Arcada Theater in St. Charles. Not sure why the group's name mentions Carlisle specifically like that — she's always been the lead singer. In any case, the band is sure to rip through '80s anthems like “We Got the Beat” and “Vacation.” (oshows.com)
Ÿ Just in time for Halloween, shock-rockers Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson will appear on Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont as part of their “Twins of Evil” tour. (ticketmaster.com)
Ÿ Also at the Allstate, suburban native Billy Corgan and his band Smashing Pumpkins will perform on Friday, Oct. 19. The band is touring behind “Oceania,” the band's well-received 2012 album. (ticketmaster.com)
