Kevin Wilde netted a couple of goals and Cary-Grove’s boys soccer team captured its second tournament title this fall on Saturday morning.
The Trojans bounced past Lakes 2-0 in the final game of the Carmel quadrangular in Mundelein.
“I had several opportunities,” said Wilde, who had 3 goals over the 3 games at Carmel and now has 15 for the season. “It was just the way we played. We created a lot through our passing. Everyone on the team is working well on the ball.”
As for Cary-Grove (10-0-2), it’s a young team growing and gaining experience in each game.
The Trojans also beat host Carmel 2-1 on Friday and the Libertyville’s JV 4-1 on Thursday.
“We just try to work day in and day out improving,” Wilde said. “That’s just the mind set we have out there.”
Wilde knocked in the first goal in the 22nd minute off an assist from Dale Opasser. He then added another in the 63rd minute off the leg of Mike McKune.
Kevin Schenk made 5 of his 6 stops in goal for the Trojans with the help of defenders Matt Arenberg, Michael Conway, Steve Camporese and Brad Sigsworth.
“Our combinations on defense did a great job back there,” Cary-Grove coach Mark Olson said. “Kevin Schenk did a great job back there in the first half.”
The Trojans’ work ethic has made the team go a long way so far and they continue to improve with each game.
“Our kids play hard for one another and for the most part they play smart.” Olson said. “I’ve always felt like this team could be competitive. That’s why you play the games. It doesn’t matter with the experience. They just do an outstanding playing for one another. Chemistry is huge with this team.
Lakes (9-4-1) had its chances to score and gave its best effort in a big battle. The Eagles didn’t let down and have been showing improvement over the last week or two.
“Over the last few games, we’ve been playing much better,” Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. “We’re moving the ball well. I thought we did pretty well against a really good team. This might have been the best team we’ve faced all year.”
Lakes also tied Carmel 1-1 on Thursday and defeated Libertyville’s JV 2-1 on Friday.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
