Harper educating new nurses around the world
A visitor came from halfway around the world this week to see the Simulation Hospital facility at Harper College.
Linda Kronenberg came to Harper from the Netherlands, where she works as a supervisor to nurse practitioners at four different hospitals. The goal of her visit was to research how new nurses are educated in the United States.
Harper’s Simulation Hospital, which opened in 2010, was the first of its kind at a community college in Illinois. Students in health career programs are given the opportunity for hands-on learning in a safe and controlled environment.
Kronenberg said she was particularly impressed by the similarities between the college’s Simulation Hospital and an actual hospital — from the facilities to the equipment to the realistic scenarios. It’s such a close approximation, in fact, that she says it seemed like science fiction to her.
“I’m especially interested in education for nurses,” says Kronenberg. “It’s very inspiring to see all this.”
