The St. Charles Singers will open its 29th concert season in September with "Magnificent Mozart," an all-Mozart concert with an unusually diverse lineup of sacred choral works, plus an instrumental piece composed purely for entertainment, on Saturday, Sept. 29 in St. Charles and Sunday, Sept. 30 in Wheaton.

The St. Charles Singers and Metropolis Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the professional chamber choir's founder Jeffrey Hunt, will present "Magnificent Mozart" at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles; and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 310 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton.

Sacred works will include Dixit et Magnificat K. 193, Litaniae lauretanae BVM K. 109, Veni Sancte Spiritus K. 47, Ergo interest K. 143, Kyrie K. 90, and Missa Brevis K. 194. The Metropolis Chamber Orchestra will play Mozart's Divertimento K. 251 in addition to accompanying the choir.

The concert is the fifth installment in the St. Charles Singers' multi-season Mozart Journey initiative, launched in 2010 with the chamber orchestra. The mixed-voice choir of 30-plus singers will perform all of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's sacred choral music -- more than 60 works -- in the course of 17 concert programs. It's a rare and perhaps unprecedented undertaking for an American choir. Each program will include one or more instrumental works for variety and context.

"Those who enjoy the choruses in Mozart's operas will find a similar magic in his sacred choral music," Hunt says. "It's an unusual opportunity to get immersed in Mozart." While a few of Mozart's sacred works are well known and widely performed, many will be fresh discoveries for concertgoers, according to Hunt.
