Driver killed walking onto I-70 after crash

CENTERVILLE, Ind. — Police in eastern Indiana say a man from South Dakota was struck and killed on Interstate 70 when he walked into traffic after his vehicle had crashed.

The Wayne County sheriff says the man’s vehicle left the highway near the town of Centerville and ran into the safety cables in the median about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff Jeff Cappa tells the Palladium-Item that the man got out of his vehicle and walked into I-70’s eastbound lanes, where he was struck by a semitrailer.

Cappa says 25-year-old Timothy Schlaefli of Yankton, S.D., was pronounced dead at the scene about 10 miles west of the Indiana-Ohio state line.
