Larkin, Huntley win Pepsi Showdown games

Erik Rodriguez scored twice and assisted on the game-winning goal as No. 3 seed Larkin held off Lake Forest Academy 3-2 Saturday in the opening round of the Pepsi Showdown boys soccer tournament at Lyons Twp. High School.

The Royals will take on No. 14 seed Lake Zurich Tuesday. Larkin is to host the game but a time and exact place will be determined Monday. Elgin has a scheduled Upstate Eight Conference game with St. Charles East at Memorial Field Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Lake Zurich got past Oswego 3-2 in Saturday's opening round.

Junior Escalante scored the game-winner for Larkin Saturday. The Royals were down 1-0 at halftime. Tony Hernandez also added an assist and Aldair Dominguez had 3 saves in goal for the Royals (6-1).

Huntley 5, Fenwick 0: Unseeded Huntley notched its seventh shutout and eighth win of the season without a loss in beating No. 12 Fenwick this Pepsi Showdown game. Lucas Baker scored twice for the Red Raiders, while Jason Zobots, David Parda and Zach Stenger each had single goals. Eduardo Gonzalez had 2 assists, with Christian Ramos, Niko Mihalopoulos and Raul Sanchez adding one each. Auston Emery had 4 saves in goal for Huntley, which will play Chicago Lane in Tuesday's second round at a site and time to be determined Monday. Unseeded Lane upset No. 6 Leyden 1-0 on Saturday.

WW South 1, Streamwood 0: The Sabres lost 3-1 in PKs in this Pepsi Showdown game. Bryan Contreras had 6 saves in goal for Streamwood (5-4).

Jacobs 6, Grant 1: Tim Hübner had a hat trick, while Anthony Moscatello, Kyle Heverdjs and Austin Ryan added one each to lead the Golden Eagles to a nonconference win. Svonko Kvalji had 6 saves in goal for Jacobs.

Burlington Central 2, Genoa-Kingston 1: Christian Moring scored off an assist from Austin VanAcker with 4:19 left in the first overtime to lift the Rockets (7-1-2, 4-0-1) to a Big Northern East win. Ian Graffagna scored BC's other goal off an assist from Matt O'Connor. Brett Rau had 7 saves in the net for the Rockets.

CL South 1, Neuqua Valley 0: Gus Alvarez made 3 saves in goal for the Gators as they registered a nonconference shutout. Michael Conley scored a first-half goal off an assist from Sam Murdock for the game's only goal. Crystal Lake South improved to 5-4 on the season with the win.

Westminster Christian 2, IMSA 1: Noah Gannon and Nick Gnan scored goals and Robert Klecynszki had an assist for Westminster in this nonconference win. Sam Carani had 8 saves in goal for the Warriors (5-1-1).

NSCD 9, St. Edward 1: Kevin Olenek scored the Green Wave's only goal in this nonconference loss to North Shore Country Day. Matt Hesch (4 saves) and John Gotheridge (3 saves) were in goal for St. Edward (3-5).
