Completion nears for Amazon’s southern Indiana warehouse

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Contractors are in the final push to complete construction of a $150 million warehouse and distribution center for Amazon.com in southern Indiana.

Seattle-based Amazon has been hiring workers for the center in Jeffersonville that it said this spring could have some 1,000 employees by 2015.

Paul Wheatley of the River Ridge Commerce Center tells The Courier-Journal that Amazon officials anticipate opening the center by the Oct. 1 construction deadline. That would allow it to process orders for the Christmas season with perhaps hundreds of seasonal workers.

Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore tells WDRB-TV that the city has been talking with other companies about moving to the industrial park on the site of the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant.

Amazon currently has four distribution centers in central Indiana.
