Surging Schaumburg stops Palatine
Schaumburg’s girls volleyball team moved above .500 for the season and also moved into a tie for second in the Mid-Suburban West by defeating visiting Palatine 25-20, 25-21 on Thursday.
Kiana Lewis (15 kills) and Kelly Koutnik (11) paced the attack which was set by Marisa Christy (20 assists) as the Saxons improved to 5-4 and 2-1 in the MSL West.
Christy was also 8-of-8 serving with 2 aces while Koutnik was 12-of-13.
Leading the Saxons’ defense were Koutnik (10 digs), Lewis (9), Christy (6), Mary Camacho (5) and Sarah Stuehm (5).
Palatine is now 7-2 and 2-1.
Hersey d. Buffalo Grove: Host Hersey improved to 9-2 and 3-0 in the MSL East with a 25-7, 25-11 victory.
Ann Mullen-Muhr (13-14, 5 kills) and Gabriella Olhava (5-5, 5 kills) led the Huskies’ attack, set by Abby Fesl (36-of-37, 16 assists), who also put down 3 kills.
Taylor Schill paced the winner’s back row with 14 digs while teammate Erica Hill recorded a match-high 5 blocks.
Alaina Murphy and Mary Zawlocki each had 2 kills for the Bison (5-5, 2-1).
Conant d. Hoffman: Conant recorded a 25-19, 26-24 victory as senior setter Suzi Loznjkovic quarterbacked the Cougars’ offense with 15 assists.
Jenn Donnell had 8 kills, 5 digs, 2 blocks and was 13-14 serve receiving for the visiting Cougars (5-6, 1-2).
Top hitters for Hoffman (3-8, 0-3) were Destinee Young and Becca Stoczynski with 5 kills apiece while Clare Shaffer and Sarah Willie each had 3.
Prospect d. Elk Grove: Host Prospect (2-3, 2-1) won the MSL East match 26-24, 25-14 as Sam Loebbaka (6 kills) and Carly Thompson (5) led the Knights’ attack.
Thompson and Allie Skowron each had 4 blocks while Maggie Haaning (11 assists) and Bree Geweniger (9 assists) set the offense. Annie Geweniger led the back row with 15 digs and Loebbaka had 11.
Diamond Boyd’s 6 kills paced the Grens (3-7, 1-2) while Christine Juhas and Kerry Souder (4) handled the setting chores. Teammate Kelsey Conley collected 12 digs.
Rolling Meadows d. Wheeling: Morgan Keller and Rachel Mickey each had 7 kills for the Mustangs (5-6, 1-2), who won the MSL East match 25-23, 25-18.
Jenny Vliet handed out 12 assists and Sami Kay 9.
Ashley Montanez added 4 kills for the Mustangs.
Sydney Kieth put down 6 kills for host Wheeling (5-6, 0-3) while Amanda Mullin had 3 kills with 13 setting assists. Teammate Deanna Kuzmanic registered 2 kills with 7 assists.
